Cobra DARKSPEED X vs Cobra OPTM X

You play the Cobra DARKSPEED X. Is the Cobra OPTM X worth the money? Published specs side by side and a verdict from rules we wrote down before we looked.

Verdict

Keep

No published fact separates these two in a way that changes how the club can be set up for you. What's left is the brand's own claims about speed, launch and feel.

One of the two brands doesn't publish: published MOI, USGA conforming list. We leave those out of the verdict instead of guessing.

We don't have verified prices for this pair yet, so the strongest verdict we give is “Upgrade only if…”.

What the brand claims Manufacturer claim

Cobra DARKSPEED X

  • Combines speed and forgiveness for players wanting max distance with a higher launch and stability. Source

Cobra OPTM X

  • Pitched as a mix of speed, forgiveness and accuracy, with tuned MOI and POI to limit side spin. Source
  • Forged face insert with H.O.T. Face tech said to keep ball speed up on off-center hits. Source

These are the brand's words, summarised. We have not tested them, and they never change a verdict.

Our take Our assessment (based on published specs)

The OPTM X adjusts a little more: a ±2° hosel against the Darkspeed X's ±1.5°. That is half a degree, below the one-degree gap we set as a difference worth acting on, so it doesn't change the verdict.

It also comes in fewer lofts. Cobra lists the OPTM X in 9° and 10.5°; the Darkspeed X is also sold in 12°. If you play the 12°, the newer model doesn't have a head for you at all.

Both have moveable weights, both are 45.5" standard, both right and left handed. Cobra publishes 460 cc for the OPTM X but no volume for the Darkspeed X, and no launch price for the Darkspeed X — the OPTM X is $599.

Cobra's claims for the OPTM X are a forged face insert holding ball speed on off-center hits and tuned MOI to limit side spin. Claims, not measurements.

Our read: keep the Darkspeed X. Your head adjusts nearly the same, comes in more lofts, and is already paid for.
