Should you replace your G430 MAX HL Fairway with the PING G440 MAX HL Fairway?

The G440 MAX HL is listed in five lofts and the G430 MAX HL in four. PING lists the G430 MAX HL as 15°, 18°, 21° and 24° — a 3, 5, 7 and 9. The G440 MAX HL is listed as 15°, 17°, 19°, 21° and 24°, which adds a 17° 4-wood that did not exist in the HL line, and moves the 5-wood from 18° to 19°. If you carry the G430 5-wood, the equivalent head in the new generation is a degree weaker, not the same club with a new paint job.

The head also grew: 176 cc to 186 cc, both numbers off PING's own spec pages. Ten cubic centimetres on a head already built for slower speeds is a shape change at address. PING makes no carry or ball-speed claim about it that we can quote.

The rest is the same club. Both are 43.0" at the 3-wood, both sit at 56.0° lie, both carry the ±1.5° adjustable hosel, both are built right and left handed, and both come with one stock shaft: the ultralight PING ALTA Quick. That last point is what the HL designation is: PING's claim on the G430 HL names a C8 swing weight and that shaft; on the G440 HL it names a lighter back weight and the same shaft. Neither page lists a movable weight, so that row is empty on both sides rather than filled with a guess.

PING publishes no price on its own product pages — every fairway shows $0.00 and sends you to a fitter — so we cannot tell you what either one cost new, and we will not quote a retailer's number as if it were PING's.

Our read: keep the G430 MAX HL unless you want the 17° 4-wood. Nothing else here is a reason to buy — the lie, length, hosel and shaft are unchanged, and the 10 cc is a look you should hit before you pay for it.
